For this novella is divided, riven, contradictory in its own sensibility, as many of its critics have observed. We might even say that its harshly epithetic English title captures the work’s unsparing naturalism, while its more mythic and lyrical American title picks up its aestheticism and romanticism. Third in this volume but first in chronology is the work generally considered Conrad’s earliest masterpiece, an 1897 novella whose notorious title will go unnamed here and whose American title, The Children of the Sea, is better anyway.
